Experiments at P8

The liquid Hydrogene / liquid oxygene rocket engine built by R. Mühleisen GmbH for DLR Lampoldshausen has performed successfully first ignition and test run.

All components where finally designed at RM including manufacturing drawings basing on a fundamental design by DLR Lampoldshausen. Using the RM manufacturing drawings the elements of the engine where produced at RM over a time period of about two years. Here we combined a lot of manufacturing processes like turning, milling, sparc erosion, galvanical material deposement, laser welding and TIG welding. The optimal combination and organisation of all needed process steps was the high challenge during the manufacturing process. The pictures above show the rocket engine finally assembled, ready to be integrated at the test facility P8 ( picture © by DLR).

Please find here the description for the test facility P8 at DLR Lampoldshausen extracted from the DLR website (© by DLR):

The objective for the tests at P8 is the development of new
combustor technologies and the improvement of current concepts.
Additionally, basic research on the chemical-physical processes in
Hydrogen/Oxygen high pressure combustion is one of the key
issues of the scientific work at P8. The results obtained from these
tests at P8 will also be used for the verification and validation of
recently developed simulation tools for the numerical simulation of
the thermodynamical and fluid-mechanical properties in
Hydrogen/Oxygen-rocket combustion chambers.
